At the heart of our work is the belief that communities must lead the way in improving health outcomes. We focus on strengthening community and health systems to drive sustainable impact, aligned with key national and global frameworks, including:

Who We Are

The 50+ Project is a dedicated non-profit organisation, registered as 50 Plus Projects 2025 / 166560 / 08 NPC,  committed to strengthening and sustaining Older Persons Living with HIV (OPLHIV 50+). Our work focuses on community-driven engagement, advocacy, expert communications, and technical support to improve healthcare access, socio-economic development and resilience for individuals aged 50 and above, regardless of HIV status.

We address the intersection of aging, HIV, NCD’s and co-infections We are intentional in driving sustainable change to enhance the quality of life for older persons, ensuring they receive the comprehensive care they deserve.

Our Objectives

  • Increase Awareness: Enhance awareness of HIV, aging, and comorbidities among OPLHIV aged 50 and above through targeted communication and advocacy campaigns.
  • Tailor Service Delivery: Implement bespoke prevention, treatment, care, and support initiatives focusing on managing HIV and screening for comorbidities in the target population.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical guidance and support to community psychosocial support networks to bolster education, awareness, and psychosocial interventions.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Develop and implement a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework that integrates implementation science methodologies and community data to assess project impact.

Work Done

Building robust evidence base and a formally registered non-profit structure (50 Plus Projects 2025 / 166560 / 08 NPC), the initiative is expanding its reach and deepening its impact through strategic partnerships, grassroots mobilisation, and innovative funding mechanisms.

Spotting the intersection of aging, HIV, poverty and NCDs as a critical public health and social developmental concern has helped the project to accentuate sustainable, integrated health and social care solutions through community-driven interventions as its thrust.

To date, 44+ Community Psychosocial Support Networks (CPSNs) established in Gauteng, Northwest, and Limpopo; 16 more planned nationwide.

STEPSSA 50+ Project SA Partners – Dissemination Report

The project titled Strengthening Prevention, Treatment and Psychosocial Support Needs of OPLHIV Aged 50+ to reduce morbidity and mortality in the era of HIV Test and Treat All in South Africa: MY LIFE MATTERS_ “Aging with Value” (STEPSSA 50+) aimed to gauge the availability, and access to, HIV prevention, treatment, psychosocial support, and non-communicable disease services in communities in South Africa.

HIV Nursing Matters – A publication by the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society

Integrated care in primary care nursing discusses an approach that brings together different healthcare professionals, services, and systems to provide comprehensive and coordinated care to patients especially the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Tuberculosis (TB) and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) comorbidity.
